People in ancient times practice the use of Shanku Sthapna to find the North.
Now to find the direction, you can take the help of a magnetic Compass.
The compass can be a handheld one of approximately 2" or 3" dia. Now thoroughly study the compass, you will notice the following terms printed on a round scale that measured 360 Degrees.
Inside the Compass 'N' stands for North direction
NE - stands for North-East direction
E - for East direction
SE - for South-East direction
S - for South direction
SW - for South-west
W - for West direction
NW - for North-west direction
Eight lines are advancing through the center, and the angle within each two is accurately 45 Degrees.
How to Apply the Compass to Find North Direction?
Go into the center of the plot for which you want to know the direction. Cleaning up an area in the middle of the plot of about 6" to 6" spot and making sure that it is level. Make sure at the time of using a compass; there should not be any magnetic field in the center. Set the compass on the 6" to 6" spot. You will see that the needle/pointer at the center of the compass, one end of the needle, which is in red. The pointer vibrates and changes for a while before arising to pause in any single direction. Now gently rotate the compass so that the letter printed 'N' rests under the red pointed needle/pointer. You will see that the needle is precisely aligned on the North-South Axis, and the red marked endpoints to the Magnetic North. This is the true North of your plot.
Now, if the road is formed, check whether the sides of your plot align with the magnetic axis.
When you rotate the compass after the needle comes to rest and locate the magnetic North, as explained above, see whether the sides of your plot are in line with the axis. If not, rotate the compass gently so that the bisector of your plot lies in the letter 'N' the difference in degrees between the needle marked red and the letter "N' in the compass gives the deflection of the plot in degrees.
If the deflection is less than 10 Degrees, then you may continue as there was perfect alignment. If the deviation is more than 10 degrees, then finding the direction and zones as diagonal plots is more beneficial.
Flowing precaution must be taken at the time of using the compass:
